Wichita Falls, Texas
Wichita Falls, located approximately 22 miles northwest of Henrietta, is the largest city in the vicinity with a population of over 100,000 residents as of the last census (source: U.S. Census Bureau). The city was officially founded in 1872 after the Fort Worth & Denver City Railway arrived. Its name is derived from the Wichita Indians and the impressive waterfalls located on the Wichita River, which were sadly destroyed in a flood in the late 19th century (source: Wichita Falls, TX – Official Website).
Broad Street and Kemp Boulevard are two of the city’s main arteries, hosting a wide variety of businesses, from local restaurants to unique boutiques. A significant historical landmark is the Newby-McMahon Building, often called the ‘world’s smallest skyscraper’ due to a swindle in 1919 where investors thought they were funding a high rise (source: Wichita County Heritage Society).
Wichita Falls is also renowned for the Hotter’N Hell Hundred, the largest single-day 100-mile bicycle ride in the United States, held annually in August.
